How strong is the virtual image seen on the paper?

The strength of the image will vary. It is dependant on three factors:

• It is easiest to see the image if the subject is well lit.
• If the drawing board has a bright light falling on it the virtual image will be less easy to see. This is easily remedied. The principle is exactly the same as when trying to watch a TV with sunshine falling on the screen. By allowing less light to fall on the TV screen by closing curtains or blinds, the picture appears brighter. If working outside with the camera lucida, sit in a shaded spot or create your own shade over the board.
• The darker the drawing paper, the more vivid the image.
